有人说写给下里巴人看的戏曲,就要以俗为本,不能故作高深。群众看戏要一看就懂,到嘴到肚。实践证明从杂剧到传奇,文人留下的本子,多为案头之作,而被大众看懂的,能流传下来的,并非文辞艰深,立意高远之类。因此得出结论,戏曲乃“俗人俗事之俗物,大众之唱乐也”。这种观点贯穿百年,解放后更是强化了这种认识。并且指出这种俗的认定,不是庸俗的俗,而是通俗易懂的俗,还是雅俗共赏的俗,甚至说它是“唯大俗方能大雅”之俗。
