MPEG Overview The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a joint committee of ISO and IEC. In order to set the standard for digital video and audio compression, the group met four times a year. They define a compressed bitstream and also define a specific decompression method for decoding that bitstream. The Status Quo of MPEG By January 1992, the MPEG Committee has completed the draft standard for MPEG-1. The draft defines compressed video and audio bitstreams for data rates suitable for 1.5 Mbits / sec. While it produces MPEG-1 files up to 4-5 Mbits / sec, the importance of using its low data rate lies in the bandwidth it adapts to the data rates of CD-ROM, Video-CD, and CD-I. The draft is divided into video, audio and system of three parts, the last part of the video and audio streams and the appropriate combination of time scales, so that they can be synchronized.
