In August 1981, a silicon tetrachloride (SiCl 4) spill occurred in California, the United States, and the accident factory was forced to close down in the summer of 1982. The accident was caused by a shipping truck accidentally hitting the pipe with a SiCl_4 reservoir. As the liquid SiCl 4 in the tank leaks to the damp floor through the broken pipe, it is rapidly hydrolyzed and produces a large amount of smoke that escapes into the atmosphere up to 500 feet. The dense fog has spread to the area of more than 3 km2 in the neighboring factory. It is estimated that 51 000 to 1 000 people have been affected and 28 of them have been hospitalized in the emergency room of the local hospital due to the presence of eyes and respiratory tract. Six patients were sent to the Department of Occupational Medicine, University of California, to find out if there was any lung damage. result
