1996年12月11日,一个举世瞩目的日子。59岁的董建华被选为香港特别行政区首任行政长官人选。这位被外电描述为“身材壮实,一副拳击家的长相,微笑当中流露出坚强性格”的香港船王将成为九七后带领港人驶向未来的掌舵人。选举结束后不到10分钟,董建华面对记者,平实而又诚恳地说出第一句话:“感谢400位推委会委员和600万市民给予我人生的最高的荣誉。”他说:“我不会低估未来工作的难度和面临的挑战,但我对香港的前途充满信心。我可以保证,会尽一切力量,去为香港创造一个更好的明天。”12月16日,李鹏总理签署国务院第207号令,任命董建华为香港特区第一任行政长官。海外舆论评价说,董建华目前已成为香港实业界四海为家的象征:继承其父经营海运积攒下来的财业,熟悉国际资本主义的每一部齿轮,既能在北京政界自由出入,也能在华盛顿、伦敦乃至台湾行走自如,同时又具有坚决捍卫香港利益的姿态。
