Objective To observe the effect of exercise on bone mineral density (BMD) in ovariectomized female rats. Methods Female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into blank group, ovariectomized group, estrogen group and exercise group. Bone mineral density in the whole body and lumbar spine were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and body weight and uterine weight of rats were weighed. Results Exercise can inhibit the loss of bone mass and body weight of rats with osteoporosis (P <0.05). The exercise group had significantly lower uterine coefficient than that of estrogen group (P <0.01), which was similar to that of ovariectomized group. Conclusion Exercise has a certain intervention effect on the formation of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
