团山位于怀宁县城东北平山公社西北,出露地层为一套浅变质岩系,岩性由灰黑色含燧石结核灰岩、硅质板岩、硅质粘板岩、粘板岩、灰黑色或灰绿色千枚状板岩及长石石英砂岩等组成。1970年原安徽省冶金地质局311地质队进行1:20万(太湖幅)区域地质测量,1974年安徽省地质局326地质队编制1:5万及1:10万安徽怀宁—枞阳地区矿产地质图时,均将上述浅变质岩系划归中、下奥陶统及下志留统高家边组。1979年以来,许多地质人员在此进行过观察研究,对前人的认识曾提出异议,但皆无化石依据,均未能定论。概括前人意见,主要有三种看法:一种认为属下古生界奥陶系与志留系。一种认为属上古生界二迭系。另一种认为灰岩、硅质板岩及硅质粘板岩等应属中、上奥陶统,
