This essay explores the process of canonisation of modern Chinese literary works in France. Starting with the relevant characters and institutions, one examines how the two interact each other and gives certain works a status of “classiques.” In terms of the educational system, this article deals with textbooks, teacher competency tests Must-read book and academic writings; in publishing terms, publishers place particular emphasis on certain works, provide several versions of translations, or include them in prestigious books as an integral part of their work’s canonicalization Dictionaries and encyclopedias also play an integral role. Secondly, from the Bourdieu point of view, this paper examines the different authoritative positions involved in the process of classifying certain authors, such as sinologists, media, literary awards reviewers and literary agents, and considers the differences between Chinese and French on Chinese classics The identification of whether there is any notable difference. The last part of the paper turns to the current situation of Taiwanese literature in the French publishing world: Taiwanese literature is still marginalized, making it still unaffected by the current trend. At the end of the article, we introduce the principle of Lettres tawanaises (“Taiwanese Literature”) series co-edited by the author and two other scholars. This series is the only one in France that exclusively introduces Taiwanese literature.
