以罗荣渠先生为代表的若干学者认为:中国知识界于1930年代阐述的“现代化”概念,是由中西文化讨论中的“西化”概念引申而来,有助于克服“西化”和“中国本位文化”概念的片面性。他们这种观点的重要依据之一便是《申报月刊》的“中国现代化问题”讨论。其实,经过1935年的“中国本位文化”与“西化”的论战,确实出现了由“西化”向“现代化”观念转变的现象;但以《申报月刊》的“中国现代化问题”讨论作为这种转变论的重要依据,不仅存在逻辑问题,而且也混淆了历史的时空次序。《申报月刊》的“中国现代化问题”讨论基本上不以中西文化问题作为出发点,而是围绕着中国在个人主义/资本主义和社会主义两条现代化道路之间如何抉择的问题展开。讨论是在唯物史观兴盛的语境下发生的,或具有党派政治背景,可以视作日后中共普及的中国现代化观念的一种思想源头。
