弗兰克·西伯利是当代最重要的分析美学家之一,他把分析哲学的方法应用于美学问题,从审美语言的运用见出审美特质的独特性,从审美语言的分类发现审美判断的特征,从艺术的情感表现论证美学术语的价值,有力地推动了美学基本理论的发展。纵观西伯利的美学思想,首先是扩大了美学描述和评价的范畴,其次是推动了美学基本问题的解决。虽然其最终结论并非不可商讨,但西伯利用分析哲学的精神推动了美学问题的深入,这在缺乏分析哲学思维传统的中国学界,是一份值得重视的思想遗产。
