Zhejiang Entrepreneurs Act as Messengers of Cultural Exchanges
By Xu Zhongyou
The 1st World Zhejiang Entrepreneurs Convention was held from October 23 to 28th, 2011 in Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China’s coastal Zhejiang Province. The convention testified to a reputation the province has enjoyed since the late 1970s when the nation started reform and opening up to the outside world: Zhejiang has served as a paradise for the private sector and nowadays entrepreneurs of Zhejiang origin are everywhere across the world. They now stand as a symbol of a daring, down-to-earth and inspirational entrepreneurship. Many brilliant businesspeople of Zhejiang came to attend the 6-day gathering from home and abroad. Some of them actively serve as messengers of cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the World. The following are brief stories of three of them.
Zhuo Xuguang
Many people know of Mr. Zhuo Xuguang because of his West Lake Margaux Estate, patterned after the world famous Chateau Margaux in France. The estate is at 280 Santaishan on the West Lake. Mr. Zhuo is president of Chinese Business Chamber of France.
Zhuo was born in Gaogang Village, Qingtian, a county in southern Zhejiang Province, where migrating to foreign countries and making it overseas has been a long-standing tradition. The county is home to a large population of overseas Chinese. In 1988, Zhuo went to France to help his grandfather and his parents run the family business. It has boomed in his hands. After elected President of Chinese Business Chamber of France, he wished to promote cultural exchanges between China and France.
In May 2008, the chamber invited a number of Chinese Xiangsheng (crosstalk) artists to stage shows in France. Zhuo did all he could to ensure the success of the performances. Through his arrangements, the Chinese artists performed at the best theater in Paris; journalists from French mainstream media covered the event; a large number of French politicians, artists, scholars and leading citizens watched the shows at Zhuo’s invitation; Chinese businesspeople and students watched the shows. The visit was a huge success, warmly applauded in the mainstream media.
Thanks to this event, Jiang Kun and other crosstalk artists became Zhuo’s friends. When Zhuo launched his red wine business in Hangzhou, Jiang Kun and many crosstalk artists came to Hangzhou to attend the launching ceremony. Part of the West Lake Margaux Estate now doubles as a venue for Jiang Kun’s Art Friends to meet.
Teng Da
Teng Da, a native of Wenzhou in southern Zhejiang, moved to Canada in 1999 in search of career development. Now he operates his own investment company and works as CEO at a Canadian foundation specialized in tapping into business opportunities in Asia. In 2005, Wenzhou natives in Canada elected him to be director of Wenzhou Natives Association. Aware that Canada is a nation of immigrants and that there was a gap between the old generation of Chinese immigrants and the new, Teng decided to unite the two generations of Chinese immigrants by starting an affinity program.
He and his wife bought a house at Victoria Street in Vancouver and donated it as a venue for events and activities of the association. It was the first venue of the new generation of overseas Chinese in Canada. Teng Da invited many of Chinese residents of the old generation over on the launching day of the venue.
Nowadays, the Wenzhou Natives Association has more than 1,300 members and the number of visitors to the venue is much more. The association organizes a series of regular events and activities to promote cultural exchanges and public undertakings. In November 2008, the Wenzhou Natives Association and other overseas Chinese organizations jointly hosted a gala performance in Vancouver. About 12,000 people attended. It was described as a landmark gala in the history of Chinese community in the North America. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and then Premier of British Columbia Gordon Muir Campbell wrote congratulatory letters to mark the occasion. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s special envoy attended the premiere and expressed the premier’s personal regards. China Central Television, the largest television network of China, screened the footage of the gala on several channels for Chinese audiences on the mainland, in Hong Kong and overseas.
On October 13, 2009, a round table meeting was held in Vancouver in search of solutions for Canadian economic recovery in the economic crisis. Teng Da was invited as one of the ten representatives of the local ethnic communities to attend the meeting. Teng Da spoke at the meeting. After the meeting, Premier Harper slapped Teng on the back and thanked him for his good suggestion. They took a photo together.
Premier Harper and Teng met again not long ago for a Canadian barbecue. They did not meet to discuss business. They discussed Canadian and Chinese cuisines and food culture. After Teng gave a brief account of Chinese food culture, Premier Harper praised Teng as an envoy of Canadian-Chinese cultural exchanges.
Zhu Peihua
In 1988, 29-year-old Zhu Peihua resigned from Zhejiang Song and Dance Ensemble where he had been working as a composer and joined his wife studying in Luxemburg. He had dreamed of continuing his dream of music in Europe, but the reality of only 50 marks in his pocket spoke louder. He worked as a kitchen helper in a restaurant. He ran into difficulties in his first few days. One day he was severely reprimanded by the headwaiter for his failure to prepare a cup of orange juice well. He found it unbearable and demoralizing, but he soon became cool and understood that he needed to forget his past glory and dignity as a composer. With this new idea about himself and his future, he worked hard. His boss appreciated the capable Chinese and appointed him manager of a new restaurant. This job opened Zhu’s eyes to the secrets of the industry and gave him a thorough training.
When he started his own restaurant business, he aimed to build it into the best Chinese restaurant in Luxemburg. The restaurant offers authentic Chinese food. Zhu also had two 2.5-meter-tall celadon vases custom-built for his restaurant. One displays Bridge of Adolf and Grand Ducal, two major tourist attractions in Luxemburg, and the other shows a Chinese landscape. The two vases contribute a great deal to business volume. Some diners come just to take a photo with the vases. With this restaurant, Zhu Peihua got his first bucket of gold in Luxemburg. His business boomed.
Luxemburg-China Association for Economic and Cultural Exchanges came into being in 2002, marking the 30th anniversary of the founding of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Zhu Peihua was elected president of the association. In this position, Zhu has made significant contribution to the promotion of cultural exchanges between the two countries. Aware that some members of Luxemburg Parliament had incorrect understanding of China, Zhu invited them to pay an unofficial visit to China at his expenditure. Zhu accompanied them to visit Zhejiang, Beijing and Shanghai to see China’s history, modernization, and ongoing economic boom. The seeing-is-believing trip opened the eyes of these congress people. The Chinese Embassy in Luxemburg was highly complimentary of Zhu’s initiative.
In 2004, Zhu Peihua started a Chinese school, the first ever in the history of Luxemburg, with the support of the Chinese embassy and the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs under the State Council of PRC. The teachers there are Chinese homemakers who married local residents of Luxemburg. At present, the school has 80 some students having access to knowledge of Chinese apparel, food, and lifestyle. Zhu’s purpose for such a school is straightforward: “We want our children to love China and maintain their Chinese roots. But if they can’t speak Chinese and know nothing about Chinese culture, they can do nothing about their Chinese roots.” Most of the children did not speak a Chinese word when they first came to the school, but now they can recite classic Chinese poems very fluently. Zhu Peihua is happy about the achievement the school has scored. □
