《众生之道》是塞缪尔.巴特勒去世后最有影响的代表作,此书以他的两个进化论理论“遗传记忆”与“自由意志”为工具猛烈抨击了维多利亚时代的宗教、家庭以及教育体制,使读者能够更加清楚地认识当时的社会环境。以巴特勒的进化论理论为依据分析了庞德福家族,尤其是最后一代恩斯特的个性特征,探讨了巴特勒的进化论思想在这部小说中的表现,从而使读者对这部小说有更加深刻的理解。
“The Way of All Living” is the most influential masterpiece after the death of Samuel Butler. His book lashed out at Victorian age with his two theory of evolution “genetic memory ” and “free will ” Religion, family and education system, so that readers can more clearly understand the social environment at that time. Based on Butler’s theory of evolution, this article analyzes the personality characteristics of the Pondford family, especially the last-generation Ernst, explores Butler’s theory of evolutionism in this novel, so that the reader is more profound about the novel understanding.
