To date, polyols have mostly been derived from crude oil derivatives, and Bayer MaterialScience has recently developed a method to make polyols from carbon dioxide by working with partners. The resulting polyether polycarbonate polyol will be further used in flexible foam products such as mattresses. In this way, the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide can be used to produce raw materials, while also saving valuable oil resources. Hans-Georg Pirkl, Ph.D., senior soft foam specialist at Bayer MaterialScience, points out that the result of making massive foams with carbon dioxide is optimistic and the resulting foams behave like the original foams. Although its viscosity is a little higher than normal products, it can be used in today’s foam machines.
