南极是一片辽阔的大陆,面积相当于整个美国加上南美洲的总和。这个位于地球最南端的陆地,是个荒芜又危险的世界,不但长年累月覆盖厚厚的冰雪,四周还被汹涌的南冰洋所包围。南极的冬季长达6个月,在这段阴冷黑暗的季节里,附近大部分的洋面都结了冰,大陆气温更降到零下70,只有极少数动物能够生存下去。然而等到九月,当太阳再度露脸,大陆边缘的冰雪开始融化时,许多动物便集结到海岸来,在冬季暴风雪降临前进行繁殖。

This land on the southernmost tip of the earth is a barren and dangerous world, not only covered with thick snow and ice all year round, but also surrounded by the surging South Pacific Ocean.
