林则徐、左宗棠在反侵略战争中，坚信“民心可用”。林则徐在第一次鸦片战争中组织群众协同清军加强广东防务；左宗棠依靠人民力量收复新疆，加强云南边防和江浙海防。他们的兵民思想及其实践在一系列反侵略战争中起了积极的作用。但由于他们本身的地主阶级立场，也阻碍了广大人民群众反侵略积极性的充分发挥。 Lin Zexu and Zuo Zongtang firmly believed that “people are available” in the war against aggression. In the first Opium War, Lin Ze-xu organized the masses to work together with the Qing forces to strengthen Guangdong defense. Zuo Zongtang relied on the people’s strength to regain Xinjiang and strengthened Yunnan’s border defense and the coastal defenses of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Their military thinking and practice have played a positive role in a series of anti-aggression wars. However, because of their own landlord class position, they have also hindered the full realization of the enthusiasm of the masses of people in their anti-aggression.
