新中国建立前夕,如何把旅居香港的各党派民主人士安全地运送到解放区,这关系到新政协能否顺利召开,是不容丝毫错失的。据中共广东省委党史研究室查核有关资料统计:从1948年9月至1949年8月,接送民主名流和文化精英及其家属北上的工作,大大小小20多次,共有1000多人,其中民主党派和文化界人士350多人,后来成为人民政协第一届全体会议正式代表的就有115人。作为参与这一重大历史事件的工作人员,作者着重记述了具有代表性的七批民主党派人士和文化艺术界人士乘船北上的情况。
