一當一九一九年五月四日那一天,北京各校学生約三千餘人自北京大学操場出发,先到东交民巷各国使馆示威。因為到此受了阻碍,就轉奔趙家樓要向簽訂卖国條約的曹汝霖算賬。剛列曹宅門首就見大門緊閉,並有警察站在門前阻拦。當有東北籍学生某君为首,從旁面厨房破窗而入,將大門打開,(?)从乃得蜂拥而入。先到客廳找曹汝霖,却不見了。但見一個中國官員正和二名日本人坐在一起谈话。那個官員見眾人進來,便掏出一張名片,上面寫著“駐日本全权公使章宗祥”十个字,給大家看。有人喊一声,我們所要找的正是他,於是大家一口同声喊:“打,打。”大家一齊动手把章宗祥痛打一頓,打他個半死,这时候院内已经起火了,大家以為事態擴大。且有不少的軍警前来干涉,遂一齊退出来,而各回各校。但是落在後面的尚有三十多人,遂被軍警捕去。
