清代中期的集句词数量众多、取材宏富,词人们不仅在创作上追求裁云缝月的艺术效果,还借他人辞藻来自抒胸臆,使集句词的抒情功能得到很大提升。集句词之所以会在清代中期蓬勃发展,不仅与当时词人想借其创作难度来驰学骋才、炫技争胜的心态有关,也与自清初以来诗词文献成果的不断积累,以及当时词坛盛行以摘句来寓褒贬、明句法的批评方式相关。而像《集牡丹亭词》这样以集曲为词的方式来游戏消闲,则说明集句词还承担着词体的娱乐功能,同时也表明词曲间的实际关系要比理论上的“词曲之辨”来得复杂。集句词的兴盛有助于前人作品在清代中期的传播与经典化的建构,也有助于词人们吸收前人作品中的优秀艺术成分,从而丰富清词艺术的表现形式。
