湖西遗址位于新干县大洋洲乡东北面刘堎村中堎水库旁,西距牛头城遗址1.5公里。遗址地处赣江沿岸带状平原边缘的丘陵地带(图一),因向吉(向塘至吉安)铁路选线穿过该遗址,1989年6月,江西省文物考古研究所会同新干县博物馆对之进行了调查与钻探,在此基础上,于1990年7月进行了抢救性发掘。共开10 ×10米探方四个(编号为90.新·大·湖T_1、T_2、T_3、T_4),合计面积400平方米;与此与同时,对与之毗邻的牛头城遗址进行了复查,现整
