惠州市第一中学创办于1929年,1978年被定为(首批)广东省16所重点中学之一,先后荣获全国精神文明建设工作先进单位、广东省文明单位、广东省新课程样本学校、广东省体育传统项目(篮球)学校、惠州市劳动模范集体等称号,获得2013、2014年北京大学自主招生“中学校长实名推荐制”推荐资质。学校以“广东省基础教育的排头兵、全国有影响的岭南名校”为发展定位,提出了“让每个学生健康成长,让每个学生主动发展”的办学理念和“砺志、善学、创新”的校训。学校分为南湖校区(初中部)和金山湖校区(高中部)。2012年招生数为初中生1070人,高中生1745人,共2815人。学校现有在校学生8450人,教职工515人,其中任课教师472人,高级专业技术职称教师197,在职特级教师3人,全国优秀教师2人,南粤优秀教育工作者1人,南粤优秀教师8人,惠州市首席教师53人。
