广东肇庆古称端州,用肇庆附近端溪所产砚石制作的墨砚即称端砚。端砚的制作始于初唐,至今已有一千三百多年的悠久历史,早期以实用为主,后来才逐渐发展为传统的工艺品。唐朝著名诗人李贺曾写下“端州石工巧如神,踏天磨刀割紫云”的诗句,赞美端州采石工人和制砚工人的勇敢精神和精巧技艺。此外,尚有苏东坡的《砚铭》和陆游的《砚录》等赞美端砚的诗词不计其数。
