他曾担任第十届全国人大常委,现任北京大学国学研究院院长、中央文史研究馆馆长,但他对自己的定位是“一位普通的老师”。为人师表:雅量高致在北大中文系,当得起“儒雅”二字的,老一辈教授中非林庚先生莫属,接下来就该是他的学生袁行霈了。这固然得益于其研究对象古典文学的熏陶;更重要的是他们强调知行合一,注重学问与道德的合一;因而这份儒雅是从骨子里透出的儒雅,不会随身份、地位的变化而变化。
