中世纪波斯诗人欧玛尔·海亚姆(OmarKhayyam 1040-1123,一译莪默伽亚谟)的四行诗集《鲁拜集》(Rubaiyat)经英国诗人菲茨杰拉德(Edward FitzGerald 1809—1883)译成英文并于1859年在伦敦首次出版后便广为流传且多次修订再版。①最早的中译本是1924年出版的由郭沫若据菲氏的英文第四版译出的《鲁拜集》。②其中一首四行诗的菲氏英泽和郭氏汉译,据范家材先生说,分别是这样的:A book of verse underneath the Bowl,A jug of wine,a loaf of bread and Thou,Beside me singing in the wilderess,Oh,Wilderness was Paradise now!树荫下放着一卷诗章,一瓶葡萄美酒,一点干粮,有你在这荒野中伴我欢歌,——荒原啊,便是天堂。③对于郭氏的这一译文,范家材提出异议说:“原诗中 underneath the Bowl,郭沫若先生译为‘树荫下’,显然,他把‘the Bowl’理解为碗状郁郁葱葱的树顶。笔者认为,the Bowl 中的 B 是大写字
