On July 18, 1883, Jiang Hsuan Hu was born in a bureaucratic landlord’s home in Taojian Village, Taowan, Yiyang, Jiangxi Province. His grandfather and father both came from Jinshi. Jiang Kangli left Jiangxi at the age of 12 to study in Beijing, where his father was an official. In 1901, Jiang Kanghu went to study in Japan and studied Japanese politics. Six months later, he returned to China and was Governor Yuan Chih-kai of Zhili. He served as Chief Office of the Northern Compilation and Translation Bureau and General Compilation of Northern Officials. Later, they returned to Japan to study abroad. In 1904, they dropped out of school and returned to their homeland to serve as director of the Ministry of Punishments and teach at the Capital University. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, China was on the eve of the great social change. The young Jiang Kanghu was, of course, dissatisfied with the status quo.
