The Burlington Northern Railway (BN) has been conducting feasibility studies on alternative locomotive energy sources for more than a decade. It has now been confirmed that liquefied, highly refined natural gas (ie, frozen liquid methane, or RLM for short) is a viable alternative to diesel. BN Railway has already retrofitted two SD-40-2 diesel locomotives manufactured by GM to test the operation of burning liquid methane fuel. The fuel is housed in a 25,000-gallon fuel-fired car that powers both locomotives. The first modified natural gas locomotive was put into commercial operation in February 1992 and the second modified natural gas locomotive and an engineered fuel car were linked to the first modified natural gas locomotive in November 1992 and are currently on the BN Railroad North coal transport routes on the commercial operation. BN Railway carried out a wide range of safety aspects of measurement and research to ensure that the natural gas-powered locomotive concept, its implementation and application is safe. The BN railway not only trains flight attendants and maintenance personnel for safe operation, but also specializes in firefighting and emergency rescue workers along the operation of natural gas locomotives. BN Rail expects to realize significant benefits through the use of natural gas-powered locomotives, including reducing fuel costs, reducing engine maintenance, and meeting current and future locomotive emission limits.
