许多专注于学术的计算机科学家大多都忽视了近年来个人计算机的一些激动人心的进展和许多面向这些进展的创新性的软件。这篇文章介绍了这些进展,并且还考虑了诸如为什么这些个人计算机方面的进展得不到学术上应有重视等问题。这也许会引出一些有关的意想不到的结论和具有学术性的计算机科学所扮演的角色。虽然此文是从英国这一角度来写的,但关于这一现象的依据并不只局限于这个国家。
Many academic-focused computer scientists mostly ignore some of the exciting advances in personal computers in recent years and many innovative software for these advances. This article describes these advances and also considers issues such as why these advances in personal computers were not given the academic attention they deserve. This may lead to some related unexpected conclusions and the role of academic computer science. Although the article is written from the British perspective, the basis for this phenomenon is not limited to this country.
