On the basis of Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club, an exploration was made about the image of silence. So through analyzing this kind of silence it is apt to find the deep conflicts in this novel. By the means of analysis, and centered on the three obvious silences, this article tries to use the Edward T. Hall’s theory of high-context and low-context culture to find the reasons of the silence and conflicts. Then use the Robert E. Park’s concept of the marginal man to explore the Cultural anxiety of Chinese American. Therefore, looking for means of breaking silence, resolving conflicts and relieving cultural anxiety are the main task. At last,daughters finally understand their mothers and admit their Chinese cultural background. Two generations accept the differences between western and eastern cultures and reconstruct the double cultural identity as Chinese American.
