Microinjection of leukocyte interferon-α from the lateral cerebral ventricle or in the periglamic gray matter around the midbrain induces a significant increase in the pain threshold in rats, but there is no change in 5-HT and 5-HIAA in the brain. It appears that the analgesic effect of interferon has nothing to do with 5-HT neurotransmitters in the brain, and it is likely to be another type of analgesic substance that does not interact with 5-HT nor binds to morphine receptors.
