1990年我在美国纽约市立大学作访问研究(香港王宽诚基金会支持),课题是20世纪数学史。举世闻名的物理学家杨振宁教授在数学上亦有许多贡献。别的不说,他和米尔斯(Mills)提出的非交换规范场论和他1967年发现的杨-巴克斯特(Yang-Baxter)方程都已成为当今数学界的热门课题。可以说杨教授是20世纪数学和物理学发展的一位前驱者。于是我去信求访。承蒙杨先生首肯,遂有1990年10月19日下午的这次访谈。金秋十月的长岛,碧空如洗。我驱车前往石溪的纽约州立大学的理论物理研究所。所长室位于数学大楼的顶层。放眼窗外,树木葱茏,红叶初现,美丽如画。室内一块大黑板,靠墙一排大书架,就中一张堆满文稿的书桌,我们隔桌对谈.话題是现代中国科学史研究.
I was a visiting researcher at City University of New York, USA, in 1990 (supported by Hong Kong Kuan Cheng Foundation) with the title of 20th Century Mathematics History. The world famous physicist Professor Yang Zhenning also made a lot of contributions in mathematics. All the same, the non-exchange theory field theory he and Mills proposed and the Yang-Baxter equation he discovered in 1967 have all become hot topics in mathematics today. It can be said that Professor Yang is a pioneer in the development of mathematics and physics in the 20th century. So I sent a letter to visit. Thanks to Mr. Yang’s approval, there was an interview on the afternoon of October 19, 1990. Long Island in autumn October, blue sky as wash. I drove to the Institute of Theoretical Physics at State University of New York at Stony Brook. The director’s room is located on the top floor of the math building. Look out the window, verdant trees, early autumn leaves, picturesque. A large blackboard in the room, against a wall of large bookshelves, a table full of manuscripts, we talked to the table. The topic is the history of modern Chinese science.
