In 1925, Pauli found the principle of “incompatibility.” Pauli’s discovery reveals new rules that have never been discovered within the atom. Fermi was thinking about an “ideal” gas with stable properties. How does this ideal gas behave? How does it relate to Pauli’s new discoveries? These questions have been stuck in Fermi’s mind for a long time.
