竖画在书法处理上通常有二种笔法,即悬针和垂露。元代陈绎曾《翰林要诀·直法》云“直者,竖画也。垂露,首抢上、尾抢下,……如露之欲垂而复缩。悬针,首抢上,尾抢下,……笔欲正,自上而下如长针垂”。后人辑录据传出于唐张怀瓘之手的《玉堂禁经》里也指出:“垂露为顿笔,直下悬针。”用现在的话说得明确些,就是写竖画时,运笔至末端不作顿挫而出锋提收,其形如针尖状者为悬针(如图一);垂露则相反,运笔至末端时不出
