社会主义在其发展过程中经历了理想形态与现实形态两种不同形态的变化。理想形态更多地与马克思主义的理论论述和人们的社会主义理想相联系，现实形态则是更多地与我国的现实情况相联系的社会主义，社会主义由理想形态向现实形态的转变是社会发展和人民物质文化需求发展变化的必然要求。社会主义特征理论是对理想型社会主义的理论描述，邓小平的社会主义本质理论则是对现实社会主义的内在本质、发展进程和发展目标的理论概括，是对社会主义认识的深化，是社会主义理论与现实在实践中相结合的产物与结晶
