从明朝中晚期开始,历经清朝一代,降至民初,在大约三百多年的时间里,中国的官府衙门中,活跃着一批被人们称为“师爷”的人物。 “师爷”是一种俗称,正规些的叫法应是“幕客”、“幕宾”;但师爷一称最为广泛,也最为今人所熟悉。由于绍兴人当师爷的极多,且遍布全国,名声极大,故久而久之形成了一个专门称谓——“绍兴师爷”。“绍兴师爷”一称除了指绍兴籍师爷以外,又经辗转流传,几近成为一般师爷的统称。
