Before the last, peaked, soaring poetry, Osip Mandelstam traveled through the bottomless abyss: a sudden personal disaster, tormenting, and reversing the entire existence of the poet. He was arrested in May 1934 and for the next few weeks he lived in unspeakable aggravating fears and almost complete succumbing to a strange and deadly will (Arthur Kastell used the term “blinding darkness” to accurately describe the suffering suffered by the victims of the trial of Stalin.) What happened to Mandelstam in the Rupiah interrogation room, and perhaps we will never know it. In the four years since he was first arrested in 1934 and last arrested in the spring of 1938, he never said anything about his experience at the Rupiah prison. Leave the jail cell and the guard takes him directly to Kazan
