The combined use of electromagnetic detectors and dual-energy X-ray transmissive detectors is a new way to automatically sort scrap metal. It is based on material conductivity and atomic number difference between the realization of the metal sorting. Both sensors have been developed by Delft University in the Netherlands and have been successfully tested. Numerous test results have confirmed that, based on the signals from this combined detector, non-ferrous metals can be successfully identified and sorted from scrapped scrap. This article discusses the results achieved in automated scrap metal selection and the potential for industrial applications. A set of pick-and-place devices containing both types of detectors can replace conventional ferrosilicon medium separators and do not require any dry-cleaning treatment.
