The East Railway Station of Guangzhou situated in the new Tianhe District of the city is the largest railway traffic centre with most comprehensive functions in South China. It covers an area of 494, 000 square metres.The project officially commenced in 1993. The domestic waiting hall was completed and put to use in January 1996. The direct line from Guangzhou to Hong Kong and Macau was opened in September 1996. The remaining part of the project is still in construction.The new station is composed of the main building, the waiting hall, the inspection hall for the Guangzhou Macau direct line, the platform, the square and the service building. When fully completed, the station will become a new landmark of Guangzhou.
