越,泛称我国古代东南沿海及岭南地区之民族。《吕览·恃君》称为“百越”,高诱注曰“越有百种”,说明其分布广泛,族属庞多,是由诸多具有共同文化特征的部落发展起来的大族群。关于越人的称谓问题,即越人何以名“越”,主要有两种说法:一则认为越是“夏人苗裔”,句践是禹后夏王少康庶子无余后代,在夏时遍布于黄河流域,是夏的方国。“越即夏,一音之转,大越即大夏”,①“越族为夏民族的演称”②。进而指明越族是夏朝灭亡后夏族向南迁徙之 The more, the pan-southeast China’s ancient coast and Lingnan region of the nation.
