神社是日本民族宗教—神道教祭祀的场所。神道教分神社神道,教派神道、民俗神道三大系统。其中神社神道因重视对天地神祗和祖先神的祭祀,亦称“祭祀神道”,主张“神皇一体”,“祭政一致”,以各地神社为主要活动中心。在日本8万多个大小神社(据1946年的登记)中,最重要的是祭祀天照大神的伊势神宫,祭祀明治天皇的明治神宫以及祭祀在国内战争中死亡官兵的靖国神社。
