(1) Past and Present of Tiananmen Square Tiananmen Square is located in the urban center of Beijing, the capital of China. It covers an area of 44 hectares and is 500 meters wide from east to west and 880 meters long from north to south, accommodating 1 million people at the same time. It runs north from the watchtower of Tiananmen Square, to the south of Zhengyangmen Gate, to the east to the National Museum and to the Great Hall of the People in the west. The People’s Heroes Monument and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall stand in the center of the square. 1.
