The term “kitchen field” initially refers to the salary field given to the retired officials by the Western Jin Dynasty government. In the Dunhuang monastery during the Gui-yi-jun period, “kitchen land” was the general term for monastic real estate. Liang-kuang and t’ao-ku were part of the monastic real estate income. The existing clerical materials do not indicate that the profit income from the Dunhuang monasteries during the Gui Yi Jun period has already taken an overwhelming advantage over real estate revenues.
