枳椇为鼠李科落叶乔木。又名北枳椇、金钩子、鸡爪梨、臭杞子、万奉果、甜半夜等。树高10米左右;幼枝褐色无毛,皮孔不明显。叶互生,纸质,卵形或卵圆形,长7~17厘米,宽4~11厘米,先端渐尖,基部圆形、截形或稀心形,边缘具不整齐的锯齿,无毛或仅下面被疏短柔毛,三出脉;叶柄长2-4厘米,红褐色,无毛。花黄绿色,直径6-8厘米,排列成不对称顶生,聚散圆锥花序;花序轴和花梗均无毛;花萼五片卵状三角形,无毛,长约2厘米。子房球形,花柱3浅裂无毛。浆果状核果。花期5~7月,果期8~10月。实生苗15年前后开花结果。
