Compaq will sell AltaVista, which is owned by the company, to AltaVista, a subsidiary, and hopes to have the subsidiary listed within a year. Schrock, AltaVista’s manager and president, is still Senior Vice President of Compaq Customer Products. Relatedly, Microsoft licensed the soon-to-be-launched AltaVista Inc. to use its MSN online delivery technology, based on MSN Hotmail, a web-based e-mail service. Microsoft also said MSN will phase out its current search engine, Inktomi, in favor of a search engine powered by AltaVista.
