在意大利的“中国电影回顾展”中受到高度重视的影片《神女》是著名导演吴永刚在一九三四年编导的第一部影片。对此,吴永刚曾说过:“我不看到妓女,就写不出《神女》。”事实确是如此。 1925年,吴永刚在天一影片公司看到《火烧红莲寺》、《乾隆游江南》等武侠神怪系列片充斥银幕,颇感烦恼。于是他决定利用工作之余去美术专科学校进修。从“天一”到“美专”的路上,他常见一个孤苦伶仃、涂脂抹粉的妇女在昏暗的街边游荡,强颜欢笑,到处拉客。每当他目睹这种辛酸的场面,就十分激愤,对她们的被逼为娼寄予无限同情。当时,他曾以此为素材酝酿画一张画,并已构思好,然因多种原因而未能完成。但这个悲苦的妇女形象却一直深印在他的脑海之中。
