阿克苏市位于天山南麓,塔里木盆地西北边缘,地处南疆交通要道,公路、铁路、民航和市区交通十分便利,是阿克苏地区政治、经济、文化的中心。全市总面积1.83万km2,其中绿洲面积8689.25km2,城市规划面积36km2,已建城区面积28.1km2。市辖4乡2镇1场,5个街道办事处,130个行政村,52个社区居委会。全市总人口56.13万人,由维、汉、回、哈等30个民族组成。
