In April this year, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage learned that the two auction houses in Sotheby’s and Jusco in Hong Kong are going to auction the four Yuanmingyuan relics that were plundered by the Anglo-French coalition forces in 1860. On the 20th, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage formally wrote to two auction houses in Hong Kong, Sotheby’s and Kwastsk, asking them to immediately stop public auction of the Yuanmingyuan relics in Hong Kong. However, the two auction houses set aside a solemn declaration from the State Administration of Cultural Heritage that they still auctioned off four pieces of the extermination property in Yuanmingyuan. The incident aroused an uproar both at home and abroad, arousing strong protests from patriots from all walks of life and sparking deep pondering over the massive loss of overseas cultural relics in our country. We hereby give a brief introduction to the four pieces of graffiti and related background.
