Animal experiments have shown that laryngeal receptors can help regulate laryngeal muscle activity. Animals that breathe naturally at low atmospheric pressure have increased upper respiratory muscle activity during inhalation and severely attenuate this reflex by cutting or anesthetizing the laryngeal nerve. To understand how the laryngeal receptor affects upper airway tension during wakefulness, the authors observed pulmonary function tests before and after laryngeal anesthesia in normal subjects.
