Introduction
With the coming of the information age and the development of business transactions around the world,a large number of people with good command of English are greatly needed, and being capable of speaking fluently has emerged recently as one of the basic requirements of modern people. It is essential to adopt the (CLT) communicative language teaching in order to develop the student’s ability to comprehend language and improve their communicative ability.
1.Define Communicative Approach
1.1 Definition of Communicative Approach. The communicative approach, abbreviated as CLT is an approach to foreign or second language teaching which emphasizes that the goal of language learning is communicative competence.
1.2 Characteristics of CLT.In Communicative Language Teaching, teaching is learner-centered and responsive to learners’ needs and interests. The teachers’ role is to facilitate the communication process,Breen and Candlin[1],but not to dominate the class.Learners hear and speak the language in real communication, and the learning process is slow, subconscious, and probably full of errors.Learners are more responsible managers of their own learning[2].They are encouraged to discover the forms and structures of language by themselves.Communicative approaches have the following characteristics:
(a) Concentration on the use and appropriateness rather than simply on language form.
(b) A tendency to favor fluency-focused rather than simply accuracy-focused activities.
(c) An emphasis on student initiative and interaction, rather than simply on teacher-centered direction.
(d) Sensitivity to learner’s differences rather than a “lockstep” approach.
(e) An awareness of variation in language use rather than simply attention to the language.
2.Evolvement of Communicative Approach
2.1 The Generation of Communicative Approach.Communicative competence is introduced by Dell Hymes.Hymes argues that speakers can produce grammatical sentences that are completely inappropriate.Hymes’s work proved to be of substantial influence among English language educationists, coinciding as it did with growing dissatisfaction with the predominantly structural approaches to English language teaching in the 1960s and early 1970s.
2.2 The Development of Communicative Approach.Education was one of the Council of Europe’s major areas of activity. It sponsored international conferences on language teaching, published monographs and books about language teaching.Experts of explaining second language(L2) acquisition began to mirror the first language(L1) acquisition theories, share some of the qualities and processes with the views of behaviorist, constructivism and cognitive approach humanism. The innatist hypothesis also inform L2 acquisition theories and include the creative construction theory (Dulay,Burt,
