萨本栋,字亚栋,福建闽侯县人,1902年7月出生,1922年毕业于北京清华大学,随即被派送美国,入斯丹佛大学学习机械,在获得学士学位后转入麻省武斯德工学院,获电机工程师学位,又转学物理,获物理学博士学位,被美国西屋公司聘为工程师。1928年回国,26岁即应聘为清华大学物理学教授,长达8年之久。1936年再度赴美,为俄亥俄大学访问教授。1937年7月6日在国难当头的时候,回国任厦门大学校长。
