Updike argues that: 1) God is nothing more than an alien to the world; 2) religious activity is necessary and people need religious comfort; and 3) sex is “new religion.” Updike made a large number of clinical descriptions of sex in his works. His purpose was to attempt to subdue sexual acts to sacred heights and to express their respect and concern for life.
