类固醇激素(甾体激素)是由发源于中胚层的内分泌腺所产生的。它包括:肾上腺皮质激索,雌激素,孕激素,雄激素。这一类激素有共同的结构特征-环戊烷骈多氢菲,共同的化学前体-胆固醇。由于环内化学键及环的侧链性质和定位不同,改变了其分子形状。从而完全改变了其生物活性。如:睾酮和孕酮之区别仅仅在于五元环上的侧链,可是这二种激素的功能却完全不同。睾酮控制雄性第二性征的发育。孕酮则有助于维持妊娠。类固醇激素和肽类激素一样。虽然其分泌量很小(血中有效浓度仅为约10M~(-9)/升),却影响组织的生长、分化等变化。并与神经调节一起构成了机体的调节控制系统。
