1862年,太平天国的军队接连三次打到上海,引起居民大恐慌,像潮水一样逃进租界。租界土地严重紧张,地价房价联袂飞涨……第一个房产牛市鸦片战争前后,天地会衍生出一个分支——小刀会。公元1853年,小刀会首领刘丽川公然打出“反清复明”的旗号,率领帮会成员和附近贫民攻占嘉定县城,继而攻占上海县城,宣告“大明国”成立,刘丽川自封“大明国招讨大元帅”。清朝政府调派军队围剿,被刘丽川打得稀里哗啦。清军败退,小刀会又攻占宝山、南汇、川沙、青浦,清军再次围剿,双方在今天的上海市区和近郊区县打了几十场硬仗。
